The "Historical South" half-day tour will take you on a journey through Georgia's past. This tour features museums dedicated to famous civil rights leaders. Atlanta is rich in history, and is the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. Experience the King Center exhibits and take in historical movements that lead to freedom. Ride along Sweet Auburn Avenue to discover historic building. Learn about the Atlanta Mutual Life headquarters, which was founded by a former slave. Experience the door of no return at the Apex Museum, and hear about the ancient civilization that began in Africa.

Part 1


The first half of the "Historical South" tour begins in a part of Atlanta often referred to as the "West Side."

To select this half of the tour, you must only choose tours starting at 10am.

9:00AM Eat breakfast at your hotel.
10:00AM Hotel Pick Up.
10:15AM Learn about the historic West End of Atlanta before hopping off at the first destination.
10:25AM Tour the Herndon Home Museum, a memorial to the Alonzo Franklin Herndon family.
11:40AM Depart the Herndon Home Museum.

Tour The Wren's Nest, also known as the Joel Chandler Harris House or Snap Bean Farm, is a Queen Anne style house in Atlanta, Georgia built in 1870.

12:30PM Board the bus.
12:40PM Lunch in the Old Fourth Ward district.

1:40PM Depart and head towards the next stop.
1:45PM Tour the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, which consists of several buildings surrounding Martin Luther King, Jr.'s boyhood home on Auburn Avenue in the Sweet Auburn historic district of Atlanta

While headed back to the station, enjoy a narrative sightseeing tour, which includes:

Part 2

The second half of the "Historical South" gets political.

To select this half of the tour, you must only choose tours starting at 3:00pm.

3:00PM Departure from station.
3:20PM Tour the Georgia State Capitol Museum,*

Please Note:
*The Georgia State Capitol Museum is only available Monday through Friday.

4:00PM Depart the Capitol.
4:15PM Tour the Underground, six historic city blocks in the heart of Atlanta transformed into an urban market with unique shopping, dining, history and entertainment. The Underground is home to a collection of public art installations and murals and hosts a number of art exhibitions in their galleries. 
4:45PM Depart the Underground.

Hop off at Oakland Cemetery. Founded in 1850, Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place of many of Atlanta's settlers, builders, and most noted citizens like Bobby Jones, Margaret Mitchell, and Maynard Jackson. Here you will choose between two audio tours:

  • African American Voices
  • Timeless Gardens

5:45PM Board bus and depart for dinner.

Narrative sightseeing while on the way will include interesting landmarks and points of interest, including Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Inman Park, and Little Five Points.

6:00PM Dinner at a Little Five Points area restaurant. Little Five Points is famous for the alternative culture it brings to Atlanta. Some describe it as a melting pot of sub-cultures, and the Bohemian center of the Southern United States.

  • The Porter
