No other city is so closely linked to the Civil Rights movement as Montgomery, Alabama. Not only is Montgomery where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived, but it also boasts many historic landmarks and civil rights museums. In 1955, Montgomery made national news when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public city bus. Approximately 40,000 African-American bus riders—the majority of the city’s bus riders—boycotted the system the next day, December 5, 1955. This action prompted a series of events that led the south to integrate public transportation.
We will also visit Tuskegee University, located in Tuskegee, Al. Tuskegee. The institution was founded for higher black education by Booker T. Washington in 1881. Tuskegee University is home to scientist George Washington Carver who became known as the "Peanut Man" after creating 300 products made from peanuts. During World War II, Tuskegee Alabama was also home to the Tuskegee Airmen who were famously known as the first squadron of African American pilots trained in the U.S military for service in the war. Also, Between 1932-1972, the United States Public Health service conducted a study of untreated syphilis in black males with the lack of informed consent.Don't miss the opportunity to see these sights and experience History Retold!
